As Babajide Sanwo-Olu celebrates his 61st birthday on Thursday, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, has described the occasion as an opportunity for Lagosians to reflect on the governor’s stewardship and legacy as he marks his final birthday in office.
Eko Hot Blog reports in a tribute titled A Chapter Written in Service, Akosile said Sanwo-Olu’s 61st birthday comes at a defining moment in his public service career, as discussions around governance increasingly shift from politics to the lasting impact of leadership.

According to him, while the story of Lagos predates the current administration and will continue long after it leaves office, every governor bears the responsibility of preserving progress, strengthening institutions and positioning the state for future opportunities.
Akosile noted that governing Lagos, Africa’s most populous city and one of its largest economies, requires more than administrative ability, stressing that the office demands emotional resilience, maturity and an unwavering commitment to service.
He said Sanwo-Olu’s administration has consistently focused on improving the lives of residents through investments in transportation, healthcare, education, economic development, youth empowerment and institutional reforms under the THEMES+ Agenda.
The media aide observed that the administration assumed office at a challenging period that was soon compounded by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which placed enormous pressure on governments worldwide.

Despite the challenges, he said Lagos sustained governance efforts aimed at protecting lives, preserving economic activities and strengthening healthcare infrastructure and emergency response systems.
Akosile also referenced the governor’s participation at the ongoing climate summit in London, describing his interventions on energy, climate and economic issues as reflective of Lagos’ growing relevance on the global stage.
He highlighted transportation projects such as the Blue and Red Rail Lines, expansion of water transportation and major road construction works as some of the defining achievements of the administration.
According to him, these projects represent more than engineering accomplishments, noting that efficient mobility remains critical to the productivity and competitiveness of a modern megacity.
Akosile further pointed to efforts to attract investments through initiatives such as Invest Lagos, as well as the operationalisation of the Lekki Deep Sea Port, the proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge and plans for the Lagos International Financial Centre, describing them as strategic interventions aimed at securing the state’s future.
On education, he cited the establishment of the Lagos State University of Education and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, alongside investments in school infrastructure, digital learning and teacher development.
He also mentioned the recently commissioned Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle, which accommodates more than 20,000 students, as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education.
The Special Adviser noted that beyond physical infrastructure, Sanwo-Olu’s administration has focused on strengthening institutions, promoting digital governance, supporting entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for young people.
He acknowledged that like every public office holder, the governor has faced criticism and differing opinions, adding that democratic governance naturally invites scrutiny.
However, Akosile argued that the true test of leadership lies in whether a government succeeds in improving lives, expanding opportunities and sustaining public confidence in the future.
“Great leaders build projects. Enduring leaders build confidence in the future,” he said, adding that Sanwo-Olu’s years in office would ultimately be assessed by the extent to which Lagos continued to advance and residents experienced tangible improvements in their daily lives.
He maintained that while political offices are temporary, service leaves a lasting imprint, expressing optimism that history would remember Sanwo-Olu’s tenure as a period dedicated to positioning Lagos for long-term growth and prosperity.
Akosile concluded by wishing the governor a happy 61st birthday, describing his stewardship as a chapter written not merely in politics but in service to millions of Lagos residents.
