According to the statement, the arrest followed a routine school monitoring exercise carried out on June 25, 2026, by a joint team comprising the Edo State Scrap Monitoring Team, officials of the Ministry of Education, and personnel of the NSCDC Safe Schools Initiative.
The team visited Oriohhene Primary School in the Bolehole area of Oredo Local Government Area, where they discovered extensive vandalism.
Preliminary findings showed that classroom chairs, air-conditioning units and roofing sheets had been stolen, while sections of the school’s red roof had been damaged by suspected vandals.
Following the discovery, the monitoring team traced the suspected stolen materials to a scrap dump located at No. 40 Evbienwen Street, Iyaro, Benin City, where they recovered vandalised roofing sheets and other items believed to have been removed from public schools.

The owner of the scrap yard, Aniemeka Hilary, 61, from Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, was arrested in connection with the recovered items.
According to the NSCDC, the suspect admitted purchasing the vandalised materials from unidentified individuals and expressed regret over his actions.
Reacting to the incident, Edo State Commandant of the NSCDC, Akintayo Saidi Ayinla, condemned the increasing vandalism of public schools and warned scrap dealers against buying items suspected to be stolen.
He stressed that anyone found aiding or benefiting from the destruction of government property would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
