- UEFA criticised FIFA for overturning Balogun’s suspension
- The decision allows the US striker to face Belgium
- UEFA warned the ruling could undermine football’s integrity
European football governing body UEFA has criticised FIFA for reversing the one-match suspension imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun, describing the decision as a dangerous precedent that threatens the integrity of the game.
In a statement released on Monday, Eko Hot Blog gathered that UEFA said FIFA had gone beyond acceptable limits by suspending the automatic ban for one year, a move that allows Balogun to feature in the United States’ FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

The organisation argued that football depends on consistent application of its laws and warned that altering disciplinary decisions without clear justification could undermine confidence in the sport.
According to UEFA, while some football regulations may require interpretation, the rules governing automatic suspensions following a straight red card are straightforward and should be applied without exception.

It further warned that decisions made during a World Cup have far-reaching consequences for football globally and stressed that fairness, transparency and consistency are essential to maintaining the credibility of international competitions.
UEFA said it was deeply surprised by FIFA’s action, describing the ruling as unprecedented, difficult to justify and damaging to the principles of the game.
Balogun had originally been ruled out of the knockout match after receiving a straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. The dismissal followed a Video Assistant Referee review which found that he had stepped on an opposing player’s foot.
Under FIFA regulations, a straight red card automatically carries a one-match suspension.
However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced on Sunday that the sanction would be suspended for one year, making Balogun immediately eligible to play. The governing body did not provide a detailed explanation for the decision.
Reports indicated that United States President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to seek a review of the suspension. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also publicly supported efforts to overturn the punishment.

Following the decision, Trump welcomed FIFA’s action, describing it as the correction of what he considered an unfair disciplinary ruling.
Belgium also reacted strongly to the development ahead of its World Cup meeting with the United States.
Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia expressed disbelief, joking that the tournament appeared to have turned into April Fool’s Day because of FIFA’s unexpected reversal of the suspension.
The controversy has sparked widespread debate over the independence of football’s disciplinary process and whether outside influence should play any role in decisions made during major international tournaments.
