The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has dismissed reports claiming that the format of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be altered, confirming that the competition will continue with 24 participating teams.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that CAF President Patrice Motsepe reaffirmed the position during a press conference on Wednesday, while the continental football body reiterated the clarification in a statement shared on its official X account on Thursday.

According to CAF, reports suggesting that the number of participating teams would change are inaccurate.
The football body also announced that the qualification series for the 2027 tournament is expected to begin in September or October 2026.
It added that the finals will be held in June and July 2027.
The clarification follows widespread speculation that CAF was considering expanding or reducing the number of teams competing at the tournament.
However, the organisation maintained that no decision has been taken to modify the existing 24-team format.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, marking the first time the three East African nations will stage the continental championship together.
Preparations are already underway in the host countries as national teams across Africa gear up for the qualification campaign later in 2026.
CAF said its latest statement was intended to end speculation surrounding the competition’s format and reaffirm its plans for the tournament.
