The Lagos State House of Assembly has confirmed three nominees forwarded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for appointment into the Local Government Service Commission, while deferring the confirmation of two others for further legislative scrutiny.

Presenting the report of the 12-member Ad Hoc Committee on Screening of Nominees during plenary, the committee chairman, Mojeed Adebola (Ibeju-Lekki I), said all five nominees appeared before the panel for screening.

He said the committee evaluated the nominees in line with Sections 106 and 192 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and other relevant laws.

According to him, the screening assessed the nominees’ credentials, experience, character, performance, presentation and responses to questions from lawmakers.

“After reviewing the nominees and their documents, the committee recommended the confirmation of three nominees, while advising that the appointments of Mr. Durosimi Yinka and Mr. Seriki Ahmed be stepped down to allow for further scrutiny,” Adebola said.

The House adopted the committee’s recommendations through a voice vote presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, confirming the three nominees and deferring the remaining two.

The Assembly later adjourned plenary sine die.

Assembly Approves Mechanised Sweeping

In a separate resolution, lawmakers approved the deployment of mechanised sweeping operations on Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, while directing that the initiative must not replace existing manual sweepers.

The resolution followed the adoption of a report by the House Ad Hoc Committee chaired by Olumoh S. L. (Ajeromi-Ifelodun) on a request for an Irrevocable Standing Payment Order (ISPO) in favour of BlueCap Technology Limited for the project.

Lawmakers described mechanised sweeping as a modern approach to improving environmental sanitation and road safety but stressed that it should not result in job losses.

Speaker Obasa said the state must balance technological advancement with employment protection.

“The essence of engaging people on our roads is to create economic opportunities for them. While we support mechanised sweeping, we must also ensure those earning a living through manual sweeping are not left without jobs,” he said.

Presenting the committee’s report, Olumoh said officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) informed lawmakers that mechanised sweeping had become necessary to improve efficiency, reduce accidents involving manual sweepers and align Lagos with global best practices.

LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said manual sweeping alone was no longer adequate for major highways because of increasing traffic and waste generation.

According to the agency, the project will deploy nine modern street-sweeping machines to maintain the 47.4-kilometre Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, covering both carriageways and tackling illegal waste dumping.

The House also requested further clarification on the repayment structure and recovery process of the proposed ISPO to safeguard the state’s finances.

Following deliberations, lawmakers approved the project with amendments, directing that manual sweeping operations continue alongside mechanised cleaning to preserve jobs.
