Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has presented N3.1 billion in compensation to 331 residents whose land and properties were acquired for major road infrastructure projects across the state.

Sanwo-Olu said the compensation reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring that infrastructure development is carried out with fairness, transparency and respect for the rights of residents.

He explained that while the state has the legal authority under Sections 28 and 29 of the Land Use Act to acquire land for overriding public interest, it also has a responsibility to compensate affected property owners promptly and fairly.

“When the state exercises its right to acquire land for overriding public interest, it also assumes the obligation to compensate those affected fairly, transparently and promptly,” he said.

“Today’s ceremony is the fulfilment of that obligation. It is not charity; it is justice. It is not a favour; it is your right.”

The governor described the exercise as more than the distribution of compensation cheques, saying it demonstrated responsible governance that places people at the centre of development.

According to him, every parcel of land acquired represents the lives and livelihoods of individuals and communities, making it necessary for government to balance development with social justice.

Sanwo-Olu said the beneficiaries were affected by strategic road projects aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion and stimulating economic activities across Lagos.

He added that all claims underwent rigorous verification, including enumeration, professional valuation by certified estate surveyors and ownership confirmation, to ensure that only genuine claimants received compensation.

The governor commended the affected residents for their patience and cooperation, assuring those whose claims were still being processed that no genuine beneficiary would be left out.

He also warned against fraudulent compensation claims, stressing that the government would not tolerate attempts to exploit the exercise.

“The same diligence that protects genuine owners will expose impostors,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat praised the compensation initiative and said ongoing road projects had significantly reduced travel time across the state.

He urged residents to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections to sustain the pace of infrastructure development.

Also speaking, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Lands Bureau, Kamar Olowoshago, said the compensation exercise reflected the government’s commitment to fairness, accountability, transparency and the rule of law in land administration.

He noted that the initiative reaffirmed the Sanwo-Olu administration’s resolve to fulfil its legal obligations to residents affected by public infrastructure projects.
