The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), in partnership with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), has launched the NiDCOM Diaspora Medical Health Impact Initiative in Edo State.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the programme, unveiled on Monday, is aimed at harnessing the expertise of Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora to strengthen healthcare delivery and tackle critical health challenges in Edo State and the South South region.

The initiative seeks to improve health outcomes by fostering collaboration between local healthcare providers and diaspora specialists while promoting the use of innovative medical practices to expand access to quality healthcare.
The programme is targeted at gynaecologists, radiologists, sonographers and other reproductive health practitioners.
The launch was held at the Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI), University of Benin (UNIBEN), and attracted key stakeholders in the health sector, including the President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti.
Participants engaged in technical sessions and discussions focused on addressing pressing healthcare challenges, particularly those relating to women’s reproductive health.
The initiative, themed “Endometriosis Ultrasound National Capacity Building Programme,” is designed to equip healthcare professionals with advanced knowledge and practical skills for the diagnosis and management of endometriosis and other reproductive health conditions.
The training features a team of renowned international experts, including Australian-based gynaecologist and endoscopic surgeon, Dr. Uche Menakaya; Prof. Francesco Cedne of the University of Milan, Italy; Prof. Ligita Jokubkiene of Lund University, Sweden; and Juliet Menakaya from Australia.
Organisers said the initiative reflects a commitment to leveraging the expertise of Nigerians in the diaspora to strengthen specialist healthcare services and build local medical capacity across the country.
