Asisat Oshoala scored the only goal as Nigeria’s Super Falcons returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Zambia in their second Group C match on Saturday.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the result was crucial for Nigeria after Malawi defeated Egypt 3-1 earlier in the day. A defeat against Zambia would have left the Super Falcons facing an early exit from the tournament and ended their hopes of qualifying for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Oshoala opened the scoring in the eighth minute after her initial effort was saved, only for the ball to rebound back to her. The forward made no mistake with the second opportunity, finding the back of the net to give Nigeria an early lead.

Nigeria’s defensive strength was tested later in the first half when defender Oluwatosin Demehin was shown a straight red card in the 40th minute.

The Super Falcons were therefore forced to play the remainder of the first half and the entire second half with 10 players.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Nigeria held on to secure a vital victory and keep their hopes of progressing to the quarter finals alive.

The win moved Nigeria into second place in Group C, with their position strengthened by their superior head to head record.
