A newborn baby boy has reportedly been abducted from a healthcare facility in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State after a woman allegedly posed as a nurse and took him away from his mother.

The mother and child were subsequently taken to a ward, where a woman allegedly approached them and identified herself as a nurse.

The woman reportedly told the mother that she needed to conduct another examination on the newborn before taking the baby and heading towards the labour room.

The baby’s grandmother, who reportedly became suspicious, followed the woman and waited near the entrance of the labour room.

According to sources, the woman asked the grandmother to move away, assuring her that there was no reason for concern.

The grandmother reportedly complied, but the woman allegedly disappeared with the newborn shortly afterwards.

The incident reportedly caused panic at the healthcare facility, as relatives, sympathisers and other concerned persons gathered to support the distraught mother.

Security personnel were subsequently deployed to the facility to maintain order and prevent the situation from escalating.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday night, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Aondongu said the incident occurred at a healthcare centre in Gboko but was transferred to Makurdi because of the level of attention it had attracted.

He said the police would provide further information after investigators had established more facts surrounding the disappearance of the newborn.
