The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, has directed officials overseeing the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) to take full responsibility for their assignments and ensure that ongoing education reforms translate into measurable improvements across the country.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Alausa gave the directive on Friday, August 7, 2026, during the Ministerial Deliverables Meeting on NESRI in Abuja, where the Ministry conducted a six-month review of progress made since the last NESRI retreat held in February.

The meeting focused on assessing completed deliverables, identifying outstanding assignments and the challenges delaying them, setting timelines for pending tasks and reviewing emerging priorities requiring the Ministry’s attention.
Officials were also required to verify deliverables previously reported as completed to determine whether they had actually achieved their full objectives.
The Ministry said the exercise was aimed at preventing assignments from being marked as completed simply because activities had commenced or partial milestones had been achieved.
The review also required programme coordinators and responsible officials to identify specific bottlenecks affecting outstanding assignments and develop practical measures to resolve them.
To strengthen accountability, officials were tasked with establishing realistic completion timelines and taking ownership of the implementation of their respective deliverables.
Speaking at the meeting, Alausa said the exercise was intended to provide an honest assessment of the Ministry’s progress rather than an opportunity to celebrate achievements.
“Today is not about celebrating what we have done and going home. It is about looking at what we have done, what remains to be done and how we can finish what we have started,” he said.
The Minister commended officials for their contributions to the education sector renewal agenda, while noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration had demonstrated strong political commitment to education reforms.
He said the mandate given to the Ministry was to ensure that Nigerian children have access to quality education capable of providing them with the knowledge, skills and opportunities required to succeed.
Alausa, however, warned officials against becoming complacent over progress already recorded, stressing that each achievement should provide momentum for the next stage of implementation.
The NESRI reform agenda covers several areas of the education sector, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, the out-of-school children challenge, girl-child education, quality assurance, data management and digitalisation.
The Minister said the Ministry’s success would ultimately be measured not by the number of programmes launched or meetings conducted, but by the improvements Nigerians experience in schools and across the wider education system.
He therefore urged programme coordinators, directors and other officials to strengthen collaboration, maintain clear ownership of their assignments and focus on delivering measurable outcomes.
Alausa assured Nigerians that the Federal Ministry of Education would sustain the implementation of the government’s education reform agenda while responding to emerging challenges across the sector.
He said the ultimate objective remained the development of an education system capable of giving every Nigerian child a genuine opportunity to learn, acquire relevant skills and fulfil their potential.
