The Lagos State Government has urged senior public communication managers to embrace artificial intelligence, AI, to improve the speed, accuracy and effectiveness of government communication.
Eko Hot Blog reports the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said AI could help government communicate its policies, programmes and services more efficiently while improving its response to citizens’ needs.

Omotoso spoke after a 5-day international workshop titled “Strategic Public Service Communication Dynamics: Empowering Public Sector Leaders”, held at Holiday Inn, Coram Street, Central London.
The workshop brought together senior public communication managers from Lagos and Plateau states, who received practical training on the use of AI and other strategic communication technologies.
According to the Lagos State Government, participants examined how emerging technologies could be deployed to improve public communication, citizen engagement, digital innovation and public trust.
The participants also worked as a cross-functional team to explore ways technology could strengthen the state government’s communication with residents.
Setting the tone for the programme, the Chief Executive Officer of UK Conferences, Wale Oyeniyi, described the workshop as timely amid rapid technological changes and changing expectations from citizens.
Oyeniyi said public communication had evolved beyond a routine administrative responsibility to become an important component of effective governance, public trust, national security and socio-economic development.
The programme featured expert presentations, practical laboratories, simulations and applied exercises, with case studies tailored to the Nigerian public-sector environment.
Participants were trained on the opportunities and challenges associated with AI, including its use in strategic planning, research, content development, communication planning, message refinement and digital engagement.
The workshop also emphasised ethical use, accuracy, transparency, accountability and professional judgment, with participants urged to maintain human oversight when deploying AI tools.
The programme further examined how AI-supported communication strategies could be integrated into government institutions and how their effectiveness could be measured.
