According to the command, preliminary investigation revealed that Nwankwo allegedly plotted the murder after defrauding the deceased of money under the guise of helping him acquire a piece of land.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Ikenga said Madu’s wife reported him missing on August 18, after he left home on the evening of August 17 and failed to return.
Police operatives, working with members of the local vigilante group and the deceased’s family, subsequently launched a search for him.
The police spokesman said the victim’s wife later returned to the station and reported that her husband had been found dead in a bush at Umuobi, Awkuzu.

Police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found Madu’s lifeless body with a deep cut to his head.
Ikenga said subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Nwankwo, who allegedly confessed to his involvement in the planning and execution of the murder.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly obtained money fraudulently from the deceased under the guise of assisting him to acquire a piece of land,” Ikenga said.
He added that Nwankwo allegedly hired two other people to murder Madu in an attempt to conceal the alleged fraudulent transaction and prevent the deceased from recovering the money.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered further investigation into the case and directed operatives to identify and arrest all persons allegedly involved in the conspiracy.
The command said efforts were ongoing to bring all suspects connected to the alleged murder to justice.
