The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA, on Wednesday inspected the ongoing construction of the Alternative High School for Girls in Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the project is part of the second-chance education initiative championed by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, OON, under the Renewed Hope Initiative to provide educational opportunities for girls and young women whose education was interrupted by early pregnancy, economic hardship and other socio-economic challenges.
The Alternative High School is designed to combine academic education with vocational training, providing facilities for garment-making, cosmetology, hairdressing, catering and Information and Communication Technology, alongside regular classrooms and science laboratories.
During the inspection, Abiru commended the First Lady for considering Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA for the initiative, describing the project as a significant intervention that would give affected girls an opportunity to return to education and acquire skills for self-reliance.
“The consideration of Igbogbo-Baiyeku for this important second-chance education project is a thoughtful intervention that will positively impact the lives of many girls and young women,” Abiru said.
The senator also expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for providing the land for the project.
He acknowledged the contributions of the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and the Chairman of Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Government, Hon. Prince Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, for their support and commitment towards the project.
Abiru equally recognised the guidance and support of the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali, towards the initiative.
The lawmaker urged residents of the community to take ownership of the facility by protecting it and ensuring that it remains a valuable asset for generations to come.
“I urge the people of Igbogbo-Baiyeku to take ownership of this project, protect the facility and cooperate with the contractor to ensure its timely completion,” he said.
Abiru also charged the contractor handling the project to maintain high standards and deliver a durable facility capable of serving its intended purpose.
The senator said the project would provide beneficiaries with not only academic opportunities but also practical vocational skills that could enhance their economic independence and future prospects.
