Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed that the US was behind the attack and that Kyiv was executing what it was told to do. However, Peskov provided no evidence to support his claims.
The White House has denied any involvement in the drone attack, calling Russia’s accusations “ludicrous.” John Kirby, the US National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications, accused Peskov of lying and reiterated that the US had no role in the incident. Kirby also emphasized that the US does not endorse or support attacks on individual leaders. Furthermore, the White House still has no indication as to who was responsible for the drone attack.
Russia has doubled down on its bellicose rhetoric, warning that relations between the two countries are on the verge of an “open-armed conflict.” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that they are working to prevent the situation from escalating into an all-out confrontation. However, he warned that they are already standing on the edge of a precipice, according to state media agency TASS.
Earlier this week, Russia claimed that Ukraine launched a drone strike targeting the Kremlin in an attempt to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moscow called it a “planned terrorist attack,” while Ukraine has strongly denied any involvement. The situation has raised tensions between the two nations and could lead to further escalation if cooler heads do not prevail.

As of now, it remains unclear who was responsible for the drone attack. However, the situation has highlighted the fragile relationship between the US and Russia, which has been deteriorating steadily over the years. If both sides continue to engage in brinksmanship and hurl accusations at each other, the situation could spiral out of control. It remains to be seen whether the two nations will be able to come to a resolution and avoid descending into an all-out conflict.
