Despite being on the security watchlist, Aleru allegedly addressed stakeholders during the session, presenting his own recommendations for fostering peaceful coexistence.
Aleru’s resurfacing has provoked outrage and concern among Nigerians, particularly as he has been linked to numerous deadly attacks in Katsina and Zamfara States. Amid intensified military operations targeting his network, Aleru had previously gone into hiding in Asaula village, according to reports from January.
The recent appearance of the bandit kingpin has called into question the sincerity and effectiveness of peace-building efforts in communities affected by banditry.
“How are we sure he’s not doing this to buy himself time, evade justice, only to return stronger afterwards? This doesn’t make sense at all,” said Yahaya Abdulrahman, a concerned resident.

Security analysts and local residents have voice apprehension about the potential consequences for ongoing counterinsurgency efforts.
Some fear that involving wanted individuals in dialogue may inadvertently embolden other criminal elements and undermine the progress made in combating banditry and insurgency.
