EKO HOT BLOG reports that Nigeria narrowly missed out on the title at the last edition of the tournament, losing 2 1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final after an impressive campaign.
Despite the disappointment, Lookman stood out as one of the competition’s top performers. The Atalanta winger scored three goals, provided one assist and was named in the Team of the Tournament.
The 28 year old is expected to play a key role again as Nigeria chases a fourth AFCON title in Morocco.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Lookman stressed that unity and belief within the squad would be vital if the team is to succeed.
“Last time, we came so close in Abidjan, but we didn’t win, so keeping that togetherness, unity that we have in the squad is an important thing for us, to keep us going,” Lookman told Elegbete TV.
“We have to show quality in games, show togetherness in our fight and we have that. Once that all comes together, things will be great.”
Nigeria will begin their Group C campaign on Tuesday against Tanzania, with kick off scheduled for 6.30pm Nigerian time.
Victor Osimhen has also expressed confidence ahead of the opener, describing the encounter as one that demands full commitment from the team.
The Super Eagles, coached by Eric Chelle, are favourites against the Taifa Stars following their runners up finish at the last AFCON. However, Osimhen warned against complacency.
“It’s all about going to war. Tuesday is the first one, and we will give everything. We are not underrating anyone in our group, but I think we’re up there with so many favourites in this tournament,” Osimhen told Nigerian journalist Kelechi Anyikude.
“So we’re going to give our all to make sure that we actualise the dream of trying to win the AFCON. It’s not gonna be easy, we still have a long way to go, so I am positive about this squad.”

Osimhen will also be hoping to improve on his previous AFCON outing, where he scored one goal and recorded one assist in seven appearances.
