Africa’s hopes of producing a first ever FIFA World Cup champion suffered another setback on Wednesday as Senegal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were eliminated from the 2026 tournament.

Belgium Stage Dramatic Comeback Against Senegal
Senegal’s World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end after they surrendered a two goal lead to lose 3-2 to Belgium after extra time.
The West Africans looked set to secure a place in the Round of 16 after taking a commanding 2-0 advantage.
However, Belgium mounted a remarkable comeback, with Romelu Lukaku pulling one goal back in the 86th minute before Charles De Ketelaere equalised deep into stoppage time.
Belgium completed the turnaround in extra time when Youri Tielemans converted a penalty in the 105th minute to send Senegal crashing out of the tournament.
England End DR Congo’s Historic Run
The Democratic Republic of the Congo also bowed out after suffering a 2-1 defeat to England national football team.
DR Congo made a dream start when Brian Cipenga gave the Leopards the lead in the 13th minute after beating goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at his near post.
England responded through captain Harry Kane, who scored twice in the 41st and 75th minutes to complete the comeback and book the Three Lions’ place in the Round of 16.
England will now face Mexico for a place in the quarter-finals.
