Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has hit back at former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his recent remarks on the state of hunger in Nigeria, accusing him of being power-hungry rather than food-deprived.
Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Monday, Wike described Amaechi’s comments as misleading and politically motivated.
He criticised the former Rivers State governor for using his 60th birthday platform to portray himself as a victim of economic hardship.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Wike said, “We have no time to listen to nonsense in Nigeria. I don’t understand why a man like Amaechi would choose his 60th birthday to lie to Nigerians about being hungry.”
Amaechi had stirred controversy last week during his birthday celebration, where he stated, “We’re all hungry, all of us are. If you’re not hungry, I am. For us, the opposition, if you want us to remove the man in power, we can remove him from this power. In Nigeria, there are no capitalist ideas among the politicians; it’s about sharing.”
In a fiery response, Wike reminded the public of Amaechi’s long political career and questioned his sudden concern over hunger.
“He was Speaker from 1999 to 2007, Governor from 2007 to 2015, and Minister from 2015 to 2023. He never talked about hunger until now. They are regrouping again, and it’s clear they are only hungry for power,” Wike said.
He added, “He joined Atiku and claimed hunger. It’s obvious Amaechi can’t stay outside of power. From 1999 to 2023, he was in government. This is a man who couldn’t deliver 25% for Buhari in Rivers despite being the campaign DG.”
Wike also challenged Amaechi’s statement on removing the President, calling it a dangerous and undemocratic suggestion.
“Let’s see how he plans to remove the President. Is it a military coup? Nigerians remember what happened in 2015. The term ‘removal’ is associated with dictatorship,” he said.
The FCT Minister defended his own political role, declaring himself an asset to the current administration.

“I am not a liability; I am an asset. You may not like me, but I played a key role in ensuring President Tinubu’s victory and I will continue to support his re-election,” Wike stated.
Wike and Amaechi, both former governors of Rivers State, have been long-time political rivals. While Amaechi served from 2007 to 2015 before joining the Buhari cabinet, Wike succeeded him and rose to national prominence within the Peoples Democratic Party before aligning with the current APC-led government.
