“The decision of Mr. President is a welcome one. It is a decision to salvage democracy and save Rivers from becoming a failed state. The President has shown that he is a statesman and not partisan in the matters of Rivers State,” Basiru said.
He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of Rivers State residents, stating that political actors in the state had been disregarding the impact of the crisis on the people.
Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency, according to Basiru, is a crucial step in protecting the well-being of Nigerians and ensuring the effective functioning of democratic institutions.
“In view of the significance of Rivers State to the Nigerian economy, we cannot allow the situation to degenerate to the extent that it affects the overall economic well-being of Nigerians. It is a signal that the President will not tolerate illegality,” he added.
In response to legal concerns raised over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend the sitting governor of Rivers State during the recently declared state of emergency, Basiru asserted that national stability takes precedence.
“If some lawyers are saying that Mr. President lacks the power to suspend a sitting governor, do they want Nigeria to be destroyed before he invokes the relevant constitutional provision?” he queried.

Basiru encouraged critics of President Tinubu’s decision to seek legal recourse rather than engage in actions that could undermine national peace and development.
Drawing parallels between Tinubu’s intervention in Rivers State and former President Goodluck Jonathan’s rise to power through the doctrine of necessity in 2010, the APC secretary stressed the importance of decisive action in preserving governance and stability.

“The decision taken by Mr. President is very sound. Any reasonable leader concerned about the security and welfare of Rivers State would have taken the same action. Would he have allowed the state to go into anarchy and become another Somalia because of constitutional interpretation by some people?” he argued.
