EKO HOT BLOG reports that the announcement was made on Wednesday by the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, during a press briefing attended by key party leaders, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Damagum admitted that the decision to reinstate Anyanwu was a challenging one, but noted that it was widely accepted by the party’s leadership.
“It was a difficult decision, but it was accepted by many members of the party led by the organs of the party,” Damagum stated.
Anyanwu’s return follows a prolonged leadership battle and legal contest over the National Secretary position, which has been a source of division within the party in recent months.
In a related development, the PDP has cancelled its planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting initially set for June 30. The cancellation, according to Damagum, was due to unresolved procedural requirements involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Damagum explained that the party would instead hold an expanded caucus meeting, which would lay the groundwork for convening a properly constituted NEC session.
“We will have an expanded Caucus. At the next Caucus, we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC,” he said.
He further noted that the party could not meet INEC’s mandatory requirements for notifying the commission of NEC meetings, which must be officially communicated with signatures from both the National Chairman and the National Secretary.
“Like INEC said, they don’t have our notice. So what we will have on June 30th is an extended Caucus,” Damagum clarified.

INEC had previously rejected a letter signed solely by Damagum, insisting that such correspondence must be jointly signed by the party’s National Chairman and Secretary, in line with PDP’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
