Former Adamawa North senator, Elisha Abbo, has emerged as the Labour Party governorship candidate for Adamawa State after party stakeholders ratified him as the consensus candidate during a meeting held in Yola.
His adoption positions him as the party’s standard bearer ahead of the next governorship election in the state, which political observers expect to be keenly contested.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Party leaders said Abbo’s emergence followed extensive consultations among stakeholders aimed at strengthening the Labour Party’s chances at the polls and building a united front ahead of the election.
Abbo’s emergence comes months after he left the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he accused the party’s North-East Zonal Vice Chairman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, of creating what he described as “chaos and confusion” within the party.
Political analysts believe Abbo’s entry into the governorship race could reshape the political landscape in Adamawa, particularly amid concerns expressed in some quarters over the emergence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Ahmed Galadima Aminu.
Observers also note that the former senator continues to enjoy support in parts of Adamawa North and among some youth groups, factors that could influence the dynamics of the election.
Born on May 2, 1976, Abbo became one of Nigeria’s youngest senators after winning election to represent Adamawa North Senatorial District in 2019.
He was initially elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2020. In 2025, he aligned with the ADC coalition before making his latest move to the Labour Party.
Abbo’s political career has also been marked by controversies. In 2019, a viral video showed him involved in an incident at a shop in Abuja, drawing widespread criticism and prompting calls for disciplinary action. He later apologised publicly over the incident.
In October 2023, the Court of Appeal removed him from the Senate and declared Amos Yohanna of the PDP as the winner of the Adamawa North senatorial seat.

He was also the subject of a criminal allegation reported in 2025, which he denied, describing it as a politically motivated smear campaign. The allegation generated public debate at the time.
Despite the controversies, Abbo has remained active in politics and continues to command significant attention within Adamawa’s political landscape as preparations for the governorship election gather momentum.
