Arsenal overcame Girona 2-1 to secure their spot in the Champions League knockout stage, scoring two quick goals in the first half to come from behind.
Though Arsenal were nearly guaranteed a place in the last 16 going into the match, much of the pre-game focus was on their pursuit of Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Girona stunned the Gunners in the 28th minute when Arnaut Danjuma capitalized on a mistake from Neto, making his debut in goal for Arsenal in place of the injured David Raya. Neto rushed out of his box, allowing Danjuma to curl the ball into an empty net.
Arsenal equalized in the 38th minute with a penalty from Jorginho after Thomas Partey was fouled in the box by Arnau Martinez. Just before the break, 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri put Arsenal ahead, cutting in from the right and curling a shot into the bottom corner.
Girona thought they had levelled the score early in the second half when Cristhian Stuani tapped in from close range, but the goal was ruled offside.

In stoppage time, Arsenal had a chance to extend their lead, but Raheem Sterling’s penalty was saved by Pau Lopez.
The victory leaves Arsenal with 19 points, comfortably in the top eight heading into the knockout rounds. With no play-off games in February, Mikel Arteta is considering a mid-season break for his squad, with a 10-day gap in their schedule offering an ideal opportunity.
