EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a formal notice signed by Chairman Peter Adamu and Secretary Peter Waziri, the union revealed that it had sought approval from the ASUU national body to proceed with the industrial action.
According to a letter obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, the strike stems from the Kaduna State Government’s failure to address several longstanding grievances raised by university lecturers.
Among the key issues highlighted are the non-payment of five months’ salaries from May to September 2022, 60 percent of September 2017 salaries, and other withheld wages. Additionally, the union decried the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowance from 2015 to 2020 and outstanding funds for the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) from 2016 to 2023.
Other concerns include the failure to remit pension contributions from 2009 to 2019, unpaid promotion arrears from 2019 to 2023, and unresolved Group Life Insurance payments for deceased staff since 2020.
The union recalled a meeting held with Governor Uba Sani on August 17, 2024, during which the governor assured them that their outstanding entitlements would be paid. However, despite a follow-up letter dated August 20, 2024, and multiple reminders in October and December 2024, no progress has been made.

ASUU Strike KASU
A subsequent meeting on December 17, 2024, ended with another promise that payment modalities would begin within three weeks. However, the deadline passed without any disbursement. Following another reminder on January 17, 2025, and no response from the government, ASUU has resolved to embark on an indefinite strike.
The union has vowed not to call off the strike until all outstanding entitlements are paid and the welfare issues of lecturers are fully addressed.
