Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the defection of his son, Abba Abubakar, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a personal decision that should not generate controversy.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that in a statement released on Thursday via his official X handle, Atiku said political choices by family members are normal in a democratic society and stressed that he does not interfere in the personal convictions of his children or any Nigerian.

According to him, Abba’s decision to join the ruling party was made independently and does not alter his own political stance. He noted that democracy thrives on freedom of choice, even when such decisions cut across family lines.

Atiku, however, turned his focus to what he described as the more pressing issue of governance, accusing the APC-led government of poor leadership and worsening economic and social conditions in the country.
He said his commitment remains centered on working with other patriotic Nigerians to rebuild the nation, restore effective governance, and provide citizens with a credible alternative that offers hope and progress.
Meanwhile, Abba Abubakar had earlier announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC at an event held at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
He was formally received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside other top APC figures from the North-East region.

Addressing party leaders and supporters, Abba declared his exit from the PDP, describing his move to the APC as deliberate and historic. He also cited the leadership style of Senator Barau as one of the factors that influenced his decision.
Abba further pledged to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election, directing members of his political structure to align with the APC and work towards securing a second term for the president.
