EKO HOT BLOG reports that Trump’s remarks, made on Monday, sparked a swift and forceful response from Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who accused the American leader of undue interference in Brazil’s judicial affairs. “No one is above the law,” Lula declared, rejecting Trump’s criticisms.
At the centre of the diplomatic fallout is Bolsonaro’s trial, where he stands accused of leading a “criminal organization” that plotted to overturn the results of Brazil’s 2022 presidential election. Prosecutors allege Bolsonaro and his allies attempted to stage a coup following his defeat, a plan that reportedly failed due to a lack of support from top military leaders.
If found guilty, the 70-year-old right-wing politician could face up to 40 years in prison.
Trump, who has also faced legal scrutiny over his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots in the U.S., drew comparisons between his case and Bolsonaro’s. In a lengthy post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said: “I have watched, as has the world, as they have done nothing but come after him — day after day, night after night. It happened to me, times 10.”
He described Bolsonaro as a “strong leader” and a “tough negotiator on trade,” while urging Brazilian authorities to “leave Bolsonaro alone.”
The ongoing legal saga has drawn the Trump and Bolsonaro families closer. Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo, praised Trump’s support and hinted at further developments from the U.S. that could affect the trial. Bolsonaro himself thanked Trump for defending “peace, justice, and liberty.”
Diplomatic concerns have deepened as Trump made the comments while Lula was hosting a BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, attended by leaders from China, Russia, Iran, and other nations. At the summit, world leaders criticized U.S. tariffs and recent military actions in the Middle East.
In retaliation, Trump threatened a 10% tariff hike on BRICS-aligned nations, further escalating tensions.
Lula, responding to Trump’s criticism and broader U.S. pressure, declared that BRICS countries are sovereign and “do not want an emperor.”

Bolsonaro, currently banned from contesting in the next election due to allegations of spreading misinformation, continues to claim political persecution and is actively rallying his base. His trial, much like Trump’s, has become a lightning rod for political division both domestically and abroad.
