EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to the law, a recall requires a petition signed by over 50 percent of registered voters, followed by a verification process and a possible referendum, all of which must be completed within 90 days.
Charity Omole, a representative of the petitioners, confirmed on Monday that the request was driven by the constituency’s need for active representation in the Senate. “We cannot afford to be without representation,” Omole stated.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from the Senate on March 6 for “gross misconduct” following a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements. Her suspension came just days after she accused Akpabio of harassment, adding further controversy to the unfolding political situation.
INEC is expected to review the petition and initiate the necessary steps as outlined by the electoral process.
