Breaking News: Nigeria Football Grieves As Veteran Figure Passes On

Published

on

Nigeria Football was once more put into a state of mourning yesterday as the saddening news of the demise of frontline women football administrator, Henrietta Ukaigwe.

The highly vexed Imo State-born sports Journalist was one of the zealous and sensational reporters who groomed and nurtured the female football placing it at the centre of the media and public attention as she worked round the clock with the likes of princess Bola Jegede, Elder Eddington Kue Jubola, Chief (Mrs) Simbiat Abiola, Mr. Larry Eze, Alhaja Rashidat Oladimeji, among others to give the Women Football League the ventilation it needed to breathe during its emerging era.

As a Board member of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Ukaigwe has for many years been at the forefront of advocating the game of female Football within and beyond the shores of Nigeria, playing sensitive roles that made the Super Falcons dominate the African Women Football in the early 90s.

With her enthusiastic and supportive efforts, Nigeria Women’s Football today has 20 domestic Clubs in the premier division with 12 in the pro division and dozens in the amateur cadre. Nationally, the Super Falcons, Falconets, and Flamingos are fixtures at different FIFA tournaments.

As a seasoned Journalist, Ukaigwe worked the Vanguard Newspapers, Super Screen television, MINAJ Broadcasting Service, among others, before accepting to serve as Coordinator of the Super Falcons. A couple of years back, she was appointed into the Board of the Nigeria Football championed by Aisha Falode, another ardent promoter of the Women game.

The death of the veteran Journalist and Administrator, and loved of women football is indeed a great loss to Nigeria Football, especially Nigeria Women Football League as she has left a space that would hardly be occurred in decades to come, explaining the metaphor of pain and anguish expressed by some of her colleagues in the Nigeria Football administration.
