The 71-year-old senator had served in the US Senate since 2003 after winning election in 2002, building a reputation as one of the Republican Party’s most influential voices on national security, foreign policy and judicial issues.

Before entering the Senate, Graham served in the US House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003, representing South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District. He also had a background in the military, serving as a Judge Advocate General’s Corps officer in the US Air Force Reserve.
