Despite former President Muhammadu Buhari’s insistence on maintaining his affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc remains determined to part ways with the ruling party, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Previous reports have suggested that CPC members feel marginalized in favor of the South West APC, specifically regarding political appointments.
This perceived exclusion has fueled discontent among Buhari’s loyalists, leading to discussions about potential alliances with other political forces.
Sources within the CPC bloc attribute their dissatisfaction to a lack of influence in APC’s decision-making processes.
In response to their concerns, the CPC bloc is reportedly considering joining a coalition of opposition parties spearheaded by key political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai.
Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, recently defected from the APC to the SDP, citing various reasons for his departure.
El-Rufai claimed to have informed former President Muhammadu Buhari about his decision to leave the party and stated that Buhari gave his blessings.
However, Buhari quickly issued a statement reaffirming his commitment to the APC, contradicting El-Rufai’s claims.
In his statement, Buhari expressed his loyalty to the APC, highlighting the support he received from the party during his presidency, which he described as the pinnacle of his political career.
He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the APC’s founding fathers and emphasized the importance of fortifying the party to advance national development.
“I am an APC member, and I like to be addressed as such. I will try to popularise the party by all means,” he said.
While former President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent statement aimed to reassure APC members of his commitment to the party, it has done little to quell the growing unrest among the CPC bloc.
Many within the bloc perceive Buhari’s continued allegiance to the APC as a personal choice that doesn’t represent their collective interests.
The possible departure of the CPC bloc from the APC could have significant consequences for the party, particularly in northern Nigeria.
The CPC played a vital role in Buhari’s electoral victories in 2015 and 2019, and its withdrawal could weaken the APC’s structure in the region.
