CAF has announced how it will distribute the four extra slots added to the 12 teams that had already qualified for the 2025 U17 AFCON, making it a 16-team tournament, EkoHotBlog can exclusively report.
Nigeria’s U17 team finished third in the WAFU B Championship held in Ghana, behind winners Burkina Faso and runners-up Côte d’Ivoire, who earned the region’s two automatic qualification spots.

Hopes of Nigeria getting a place in the tournament were dashed when CAF gave two of the four extra slots to Gambia, who finished third in WAFU Zone A, and Tunisia.

The last two spots will be taken by the top two teams from the UNIFFAC region qualifiers, which will be held in Cameroon from February 16 to 28. Five teams—Cameroon, Gabon, Central African Republic, DR Congo, and Congo—will compete for these places.

This means Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, who have won the U17 World Cup five times, will not play in the 2025 U17 AFCON. They also miss out on back-to-back FIFA U17 World Cups.
