Canadian Tourist Loses Both Hands in Shark Attack While Taking Photos

A Canadian tourist, Nathalie Ross, lost both hands in a shark attack while attempting to take photos with the animal in shallow waters off Thompson’s Cove Beach in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the incident occurred on February 7 at around 10:30 a.m. Ross’s husband tried to fend off the shark before she was brought to shore, where bystanders worked desperately to stop the bleeding.

Local reports indicate that, in addition to losing both hands, Ross sustained a bite wound on her thigh. She was airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment and is expected to survive.

Authorities confirmed that Ross was engaging with the shark for a photograph when the attack happened. The species of the six-foot-long shark has not yet been identified.

Following the attack, officials temporarily closed Thompson’s Cove Beach, reopening it on February 9 after confirming the shark had moved into deeper waters.

This incident follows a similar tragedy in Australia, where 17-year-old Charlize Zmuda was killed by a shark while swimming off Woorim Beach, Queensland.
