Gunmen have kidnapped a Catholic priest, Rev. Father Livinus Maurice, along with two others in Rivers State, sending shockwaves through the religious community.
Maurice, who serves as the Parish Priest of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Isokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area, was abducted on Wednesday while returning from a hospital visit along the Elele-Isiokpo Road.
The Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt confirmed the tragic incident in a statement signed by its Chancellor, Reverend Father Bernadine Anaele. The church has called for urgent prayers from the faithful for the safe and unconditional release of Maurice and his companions.
“Although the matter has been reported to the security agencies, Christ’s faithful of Port Harcourt Diocese and Nigeria at large have been urged to intensify prayers for the safe and unconditional release of the priest and those with him,” the statement read.
State police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko also confirmed the abduction, stating that security forces are actively investigating the case. She assured that officers are working tirelessly to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible.
“The command is aware of the incident, and we are making frantic efforts to ensure the priest and the two others are released unharmed,” she said.
The abduction has sparked widespread concern among residents and religious groups, with many calling on the government to address rising insecurity in the region.
Kidnappings have become a growing menace in parts of Nigeria, often involving ransom demands.
As efforts continue to secure their release, the church and community remain hopeful that Rev. Father Maurice and the others will return safely. Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to assist in the investigation.
