The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has responded with measured concern to disturbing allegations made by 12 Nigerian workers recently repatriated from the Central African Republic (CAR), who accused their Chinese employers of sexual abuse, forced labour, and wage denial.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the victims, who returned to Nigeria last week, shared distressing accounts of exploitation by Chinese nationals involved in mining operations in the Central African nation. Their stories, which sparked public outrage, included claims of physical and sexual abuse, starvation, and non-payment of agreed salaries.

Reacting to the growing media coverage, a representative of the Chinese Embassy told reporters in Abuja that the mission is aware of the reports and is taking the matter seriously.
“We have taken note of these reports and consider this a matter of great importance,” the official said. “An investigation will be launched without delay. However, we urge that the information be treated cautiously and not widely circulated until the findings are concluded.”

The Embassy also stressed that China maintains strict expectations for its nationals abroad, insisting that all Chinese citizens are required to abide by the laws of their host countries and conduct business in line with local regulations.
Meanwhile, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), which received the returnees upon their arrival in Abuja, has vowed to ensure that justice is served. The Commission has begun documenting testimonies from the victims and is expected to collaborate with relevant international and diplomatic channels in the pursuit of accountability.
The Chinese Embassy said it would determine next steps based on the outcome of its internal investigation.
