Cleric Calls for Ban on Valentine’s Day Celebration in Nigeria

A prominent Nigerian cleric, Bishop Charles Ighele, has called for the ban of Valentine’s Day celebrations in the country, citing concerns over its perceived promotion of immorality.

Ighele, the General Superintendent of the Holy Spirit Mission in Lagos, made the call during an interview on Wednesday. He argued that the day, originally meant to promote love and humanitarian acts, has been misinterpreted and turned into a celebration of romantic and sexual relationships.

“The day has been distorted to promote romantic indulgence instead of selfless love and aid to the needy,” he stated.

Describing Valentine’s Day as a deceptive tool of the devil, Ighele claimed it has been used to impose a “universal day of immorality” on society.

He particularly warned that many young people and even married couples now associate love with uncontrolled passion rather than the selfless and unconditional love described in the Bible.

The cleric also linked the celebration to the Roman god of love, Cupid, which he claimed promotes erotic desires. “The day is associated with a romantic demon known as Cupid, one of the rulers of darkness, as found in Ephesians 6:11-12,” he explained.

He further argued that the celebration encourages sexual temptations and entertainment that undermine moral values. “Cupid influences people to dedicate February 14 as a day to engage in various forms of sexual perversion under the guise of love,” he added.

Ighele urged the government to take action by banning the celebration, emphasizing that such a move would help protect young people from harmful influences.

“It is the duty of the government, the church, schools, and families to promote values that uplift society,” he stressed.
