EKO HOT BLOG reports that the convention was expected to produce new national officers for the opposition party, but the decision followed a suit filed by three senior PDP members: Austin Nwachukwu, chairman of the Imo State chapter; Amah Nnanna, chairman of the Abia State chapter; and Turnah George, secretary of the South-South zone.
The plaintiffs accused the party leadership of breaching its constitution in the build-up to the convention. They argued that the process violated both the PDP constitution and the Electoral Act, citing irregularities in the conduct of congresses in at least 14 states.
Their counsel maintained that the case was not merely an internal party dispute but a constitutional matter that required judicial intervention. “No congress was conducted in 14 states, which renders the convention preparation unconstitutional,” the lawyer told the court.
Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice James Omotosho ruled in favour of the plaintiffs and ordered the PDP to suspend all activities related to the proposed convention. The judge directed the party to rectify all procedural breaches and issue the mandatory 21-day statutory notice before rescheduling the event.
Justice Omotosho emphasized that political parties must strictly adhere to their constitutions and the provisions of the Electoral Act to ensure fairness and internal democracy.
