As tributes continue to pour in following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has highlighted his lasting impact on diaspora engagement and Nigeria’s global image.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a statement issued by NiDCOM’s Media Unit, Dabiri-Erewa described Buhari’s death as not just a national loss, but the departure of a leader who prioritized the role of Nigerians abroad in nation-building.

She credited the former president with institutionalizing diaspora affairs by signing into law the act that established NiDCOM in 2019, a move she said demonstrated his “unwavering belief in the power and potential of Nigerians living outside the country.”
“President Buhari’s support for the establishment of NiDCOM in 2019 demonstrated his deep appreciation for the Nigerian Diaspora and his belief in their capacity to contribute meaningfully to the nation,” she said.

Beyond institutional efforts, Dabiri-Erewa noted that Buhari was instrumental in strengthening foreign relations and presenting Nigeria as a nation focused on reform and international cooperation.
Calling for prayers for his soul and strength for his family, she urged Nigerians at home and abroad to honor his memory by embodying the values he held dear: integrity, patriotism, and selfless service.
