EKO HOT BLOG reports that De Zerbi, recently appointed as Spurs head coach, faced criticism after remarks from his time at Olympique de Marseille resurfaced. The comments related to Greenwood, who faced serious criminal charges in 2022 that were later dropped.
During his spell in France, the Italian manager described Greenwood as a “good guy” and suggested he had paid a “heavy price” amid criticism following his arrest on suspicion of rape and assault.
Addressing the controversy in a statement issued on Thursday, March 2, De Zerbi said he “never wanted to downplay” violence, particularly against women.
“I’ve consistently fought to be on the side of those who need protecting. I’m sorry if I offended anyone’s feelings with this subject matter,” he said.
The 45-year-old maintained that he supports vulnerable individuals and expressed hope that fans would come to understand his intentions over time.
Despite the apology, some supporters have continued to express concern over his appointment, questioning his ability to keep the club in the Premier League beyond this season.
De Zerbi replaced Igor Tudor, who was dismissed with the team struggling near the bottom of the table.

Before the March international break, Tottenham were sitting just one point above the relegation zone.
