EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed that the incident occurred on 23 September 2025 during Flight DL055, when a fire erupted in the aircraft’s oven while in flight.
The flight was forced to make an unexpected landing in Accra, Ghana for safety and operational reasons.
NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, said that although the fire was contained and posed no immediate threat to passengers, the resulting delay caused the crew to exceed their allowable duty time, preventing them from continuing to Atlanta.
He explained that some passengers were rebooked on the Delta Accra–New York flight that same evening, and additional rebookings were made the following night. The diverted flight, DL055, eventually departed Accra for Atlanta on 25 September 2025 at approximately 12:00 hours.
In connection to the incident, Delta also canceled its inbound Atlanta–Lagos flight scheduled for 25 September. The airline provided hotel accommodations and ground transport for passengers affected by this cancellation. Among remedial actions, 23 passengers were rebooked onto Air France, while others were arranged to travel via British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa.
Remaining passengers, according to NCAA, were scheduled to depart on Delta’s next Lagos-bound service on 26 September 2025 at 11:40 a.m.
The NCAA has assured that it will continue to monitor the situation and intervene where necessary to ensure passenger safety and airline accountability.
