Following the announcement, some media reports linked the development to a similar military operation carried out in 2024 in which another terrorist commander bearing the same name was reportedly neutralised, raising questions over possible identity confusion.
Addressing the controversy in a statement, Somalia Uba explained that the use of similar names, aliases and nom de guerres is common among fighters affiliated with Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram.
According to him, terrorist groups deliberately recycle names and identities as part of their indoctrination and concealment strategy across the North-East and Lake Chad Basin region.
“It is crucial to note that in the North East region and throughout the Lake Chad Basin, the use of similar or identical names, aliases and nom de guerres is prevalent among ISWAP and Boko Haram terrorists,” the statement noted.
The Defence Headquarters further stated that the Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki eliminated during the latest operation was positively identified through both human intelligence and technical surveillance.
According to the military, the slain commander was a senior operative within the global Islamic State network with direct links to international terrorist coordination, funding and operations across the Sahel region.
The military described the operation as a major success in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts aimed at dismantling terrorist structures operating within Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

The DHQ also reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and its international partners to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups and urged the public to rely only on verified information from official channels to avoid misinformation.
