Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has alleged that the cases filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were politically motivated.
Saraki claimed that his troubles with the anti-graft agency began after the Senate, under his leadership, refused to confirm an acting Chairman of the EFCC during a screening exercise.
According to him, lawmakers rejected the nominee because he did not meet the required qualifications and was not cleared by security reports presented to the Senate.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the former Senate President said despite the rejection, the acting chairman remained in office, a development he described as a direct disregard for the decision of the legislature.
Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, Saraki alleged that some lawmakers, including himself, faced persecution for opposing the nominee’s confirmation.

“We had the acting chairman of EFCC come before us. After reviewing his qualifications and security report, we said no. But he stayed in office. Defiant. Totally disregarded our rejection.
“And some of us paid a personal cost for that. We were hunted, just because of that,” Saraki said.
