EKO HOT BLOG reports that he said Egbetokun stepped down over family matters requiring his full attention.
“The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention”, Onanuga told Punch Newspapers.
However, sources said the development followed a private meeting between Egbetokun and President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening.
Insiders disclosed that the police chief was asked to step aside during the meeting.
He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
Egbetokun was appointed Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023.
Before his appointment, he served as Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department.
He succeeded Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure ended in September 2023 after an extension granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Meanwhile, at least 29 senior officers, including Deputy Inspectors General of Police and Assistant Inspectors General of Police, are set to be removed following Egbetokun’s exit.

Sources within the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission told Sahara Reporters on Tuesday that the move forms part of a broader restructuring of the police leadership.
