EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to a statement released by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, P.O. Abraham, the initiative aims to strengthen fire safety compliance and improve national resilience through proactive risk management.
The inauguration, themed “Strengthening Fire Safety Compliance in Public Buildings: A Call to Action for National Resilience,” underscores the FFS’s renewed commitment to preventing fire disasters through stronger regulation and enforcement.
In his address, Controller General Adeyemi expressed concern over the growing number of fire outbreaks in major cities, including the recent Afritower fire in Lagos and several plaza fires in Abuja. He said these incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter enforcement of fire safety standards in both public and private buildings.
The newly inaugurated Task Force has been directed to conduct a nationwide audit of buildings, assessing their levels of fire risk and compliance with existing safety regulations. Their responsibilities include: mapping public and private structures according to fire risk categories, inspecting facilities for compliance, and submitting detailed recommendations to guide future enforcement and policy decisions.
Adeyemi reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and critical national infrastructure, stressing that “fire safety is not a choice but a shared responsibility.” He also warned that negligence and disregard for safety codes would no longer be tolerated.
The Task Force is chaired by Assistant Controller General Bolarinde Tajudeen Muhammed, who heads the Inspection, Investigation, and Enforcement (I.I.E.) Department. Other members include the Deputy Controller of Operations (FCT Command), the Provost Marshal, the National Public Relations Officer, and the Legal Director, who will serve as the Secretariat.

Declaring the Task Force inaugurated, the Controller General charged members to carry out their duties with professionalism, transparency, and integrity. He urged owners and managers of public and private buildings to cooperate fully during the audit exercise, noting that the initiative is a vital step toward creating a safer and more resilient Nigeria.
