Festac Town Residents Petition IGP Over Alleged Illegal Demolitions by FHA Officials
Residents of Festac Town, Lagos, have filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over alleged violations of the rule of law by officials of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).
Through their lawyer, Mr. Adetayo Bello, the residents accused the FHA of continuing demolitions in Festac Extension, 6th Avenue, despite a valid court injunction prohibiting such actions.
The petition names the FHA Zonal Manager, Akintola Olagbenro, along with two other individuals, Chief Chuka Umenne and Coach Sesi, as key figures allegedly complicit in the ongoing demolitions.

The restraining order, issued by Justice O. Awope of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on September 11, 2023, barred the FHA and its agents from further demolitions in the area pending the resolution of the substantive case (Suit No: ID/7397GCM/2023).
Despite this order, residents allege that demolitions have resumed, leading to significant property damage and distress within the community.
The petition reads: “This act not only represents a contempt of court but also a criminal abuse of power that can endanger public peace.”
The residents are urging the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the actions of the FHA Zonal Manager and his associates, hold them accountable for contempt of court, and implement measures to prevent further illegal demolitions.

They also emphasized that the continued unlawful actions undermine public confidence in the judiciary and infringe upon the fundamental rights of property owners in Festac Town.
The petition concludes with an appeal to the IGP to intervene swiftly, ensure justice is served, and restore stability to the affected community.
As of the time of reporting, the FHA has not issued an official response.
