The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, Lagos State, has intensified efforts to reposition the institution as a comprehensive, one-stop healthcare facility through the expansion of specialist services, upgraded diagnostic capabilities, and strengthened medical training programs.
Eko Hot Blog reports that less than a year after its upgrade to a Federal Medical Centre, the hospital has witnessed rapid transformation across critical departments, particularly in laboratory services and specialist care.
The Medical Director, Dr. Adesola Kaka, disclosed that the centre has moved far beyond what existed during its days as a General Hospital. “We are miles away from where we met the Laboratory.
Tests that were not dreamt of or previously available in this town are now being conducted here at FMC Epe. People no longer need to travel to Ajah or Lekki on referral for many specialized investigations,” he said.
According to him, the upgraded laboratory now conducts advanced diagnostic tests including infertility investigations, hormonal profiling, Prostate Specific Antigen testing for prostate evaluation, cardiac enzyme analysis for heart-related conditions, and echocardiography in addition to standard Electrocardiography.
He noted that the dental department has also grown significantly and is now fully functional with modern facilities. Beyond diagnostics, FMC Epe has strengthened its specialist manpower.
A Cardiology Clinic now holds every Saturday, with a visiting Cardiologist attending to patients requiring heart-related consultations and follow-up care.
The hospital currently has a Paediatric Surgeon, two General Surgeons, and three experienced Orthopaedic Surgeons, further expanding access to specialized treatment within the region.
Dr. Kaka explained that these developments are deliberate steps toward reducing medical referrals outside Epe and minimizing the financial burden on families.
“Our goal is to ensure that residents of Epe and its axis can access both basic and specialized healthcare services without unnecessary stress or long-distance travel,” he stated.
In the area of medical education and training, the Medical Director revealed that the hospital has secured accreditation for Nursing Internship, enabling nursing graduates to complete their internship training at FMC Epe.
Efforts are also ongoing to obtain accreditation for Housemanship and Resident Training Programs, which will allow fresh medical doctors to undergo mandatory post-NYSC training at the centre.
He further disclosed that construction of a College of Nursing and hostel facilities is ongoing through the intervention of Princess Adejoke Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals.
The project is expected to boost manpower development and enhance healthcare delivery within the region.
Additionally, the Lagos State Government is set to officially hand over the Accident and Trauma Centre located within the hospital premises to FMC Epe for full utilization, a development that will significantly improve emergency response and trauma care services in the area.
Dr. Kaka emphasized that despite the rapid expansion and introduction of advanced services, affordability remains a guiding principle of the centre’s operations.
“My advice is that people should register for Health Insurance. Out-of-pocket funding of healthcare is not sustainable and can push families into poverty. Insurance protects households and ensures access to care when needed.
A healthy Nigerian is a wealthy and prosperous Nigerian,” he concluded. He also acknowledged the contributions of Tunji Alausa, former Minister of Health and an indigene of Epe, for championing affordable healthcare and bringing critical medical opportunities to his hometown.
Dr. Kaka noted, “Dr. Tunji Alausa had always maintained that all services at FMC Epe should be affordable to residents in Epe and its axis. That principle has guided all our expansions and continues to be the standard we uphold.”
Furthermore, he expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu for their continued support in strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality medical services.
With these ongoing improvements, FMC Epe is steadily evolving into a regional hub for specialized, affordable, and accessible healthcare services for residents of Epe and surrounding communities, while maintaining a standard of care inspired by local leadership and national support.
