EKO HOT BLOG reports that the visit was confirmed by Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and his younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, in separate statements posted on Facebook. Both men described the governor’s visit as a significant gesture and a fulfillment of an earlier commitment.
Ejimakor commended Governor Otti for standing by his word, noting that the visit demonstrated courage and sincerity. He expressed hope that the engagement would mark the beginning of a process that could lead to Kanu’s release.
He wrote that Otti’s presence in Sokoto was “a step toward ending this undeserved ordeal”.
Emmanuel Kanu also stressed that the governor’s action carried deep symbolic meaning, adding that the people of Sokoto joined in sending a unified message by receiving the Abia governor during the visit.
Governor Otti had previously stated that discreet efforts to secure Kanu’s freedom had begun long before the court delivered its judgement. The IPOB leader was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of terrorism related offences.

The governor’s latest move is expected to further intensify political, legal and diplomatic discussions surrounding Kanu’s continued detention.
