Osun West Senator Lere Oyewumi Defects From PDP To Accord Party
The senator representing Osun West in the Nigerian Senate, Lere Oyewumi, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Accord Party.
Oyewumi, who was elected on the PDP platform in the 2023 general elections, announced his defection in a statement released on Monday in Osogbo.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that before his defection, Oyewumi was the last PDP senator representing Osun State.
His exit follows the earlier defections of two other senators from the state, Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi, who had previously moved to the All Progressives Congress.
The PDP in Osun had also lost three members of the House of Representatives of Nigeria to the APC during a wave of defections in 2025.
The development comes months after the governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, defected from the PDP to the Accord Party in December 2025. Although Oyewumi initially remained in the PDP after the governor’s move, speculation about his political future intensified following the recent defection of six members of the House of Representatives from the state to the Accord Party.
Similarly, the 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the PDP platform had earlier moved to the Accord Party to align politically with the governor. According to a statement issued by his media aide, Timileyin Popoola, the senator formally registered as a member of the Accord Party at Ward 9 in Ikire, located in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.
“Deputy Minority Leader of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Lere Kamorudeen Oyewumi, has formally joined the Accord Party in his ward, Ward 9, Irewole Local Government Area, marking a significant political development in Osun West,” the statement said.
It added that the senator was formally received into the party by the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, alongside other party leaders and supporters. The statement said Oyewumi’s decision to leave the PDP followed his earlier resignation from the party due to internal disagreements.
“The move follows his earlier resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a decision driven by irreconcilable differences within the opposition party and a desire to strengthen his commitment to the people he represents,” the statement added. It also noted that the senator’s defection reflects his commitment to effective representation and policies aimed at promoting development in Osun State.
