A woman drew attention during nationwide protests against severe economic hardship in Nigeria on Thursday by carrying an empty pot on her head, symbolizing her struggle with hunger.
The woman, visibly emotional, stood out among the hundreds of protesters at the gathering. Her cries of “Ebi o, ebi o,” which translates to “hunger, hunger” in English, echoed through the crowd as tears streamed down her face, drawing attention to her plight.
The protests, which erupted across Nigeria, saw demonstrators in various states expressing their dissatisfaction with the country’s economic challenges. While some regions witnessed significant gatherings, others had deserted main roads.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the #EndBadGovernance protests are currently taking place in Lagos, with large numbers of youths gathering under the Ikeja Underbridge, planning to march to Ojota.
The protest, which began today, is scheduled to continue until August 10.
The demonstrators, who assembled around 8 am, chanted solidarity songs and carried placards demanding better governance. The protests are occurring amid a heavy security presence, including police, the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and civil defense personnel. Despite the limited number of vehicles on roads like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Alausa routes, hundreds of youths are marching from the Underbridge.
