The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has seized several waste carts and arrested one individual during an early morning enforcement operation on Lagos Island, following targeted surveillance of unauthorised waste disposal activities in the area, Eko Hot Blog reports.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, Mr Mukaila Sanusi, the carts were intercepted at dawn by LAWMA enforcement officers during a coordinated operation designed

to disrupt illegal waste movement and prevent the re-emergence of dump sites in areas already cleared by the authority.
Sanusi explained that the operation focused on locations identified through intelligence and surveillance, where unregulated waste disposal had continued despite previous clean-up efforts.
“While the waste carts were seized at Isale-Eko, an individual identified as Muritala Suleiman, a 42-year-old male from Zamfara State, was intercepted at about 1:31 a.m. while illegally dumping waste at Tinubu Square, Lagos Island,” the statement said.
It noted that LAWMA’s early-hour monitoring remains a critical enforcement strategy, as illegal dumping activities are often carried out during periods of low visibility to evade detection.

Reacting to the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said sustained enforcement is necessary to deter offenders and protect stabilised sites from renewed abuse.
According to him, “Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement operatives are strategically deployed across the state to eradicate persistent black spots and ensure environmental sustainability along major corridors.”
LAWMA urged residents and waste handlers to comply strictly with approved waste disposal channels and support government efforts to keep public spaces clean and safe.
The authority is the statutory agency responsible for solid waste management and environmental sanitation in Lagos State. Established to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation, population growth and economic expansion, LAWMA oversees waste collection, transportation, recycling and disposal across the state.
Over the years, the agency has transitioned from direct waste collection to a public-private partnership model, engaging licensed private operators to improve efficiency and coverage across residential, commercial and industrial areas.
