According to a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the commission agreed to shift the exercise to a later date.

INEC noted that voter revalidation is an important process aimed at keeping the National Register of Voters accurate and reliable. The exercise is designed to verify existing voter information, correct errors, eliminate duplicate or invalid entries, and strengthen the credibility of the voter database.
It also provides an opportunity for registered voters to confirm and update their personal details.
Despite the postponement, the commission reaffirmed its dedication to delivering transparent and credible elections, emphasizing its commitment to free, fair, and inclusive electoral processes.

In a letter dated April 4 and signed by its Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC instructed all Resident Electoral Commissioners to suspend ongoing publicity and preparations for the exercise.
They were also told to pause further arrangements and wait for new directives from the commission.
The commission acknowledged that the change in plans might cause some inconvenience and expressed regret over the disruption.
Before the postponement, INEC had scheduled the nationwide voter revalidation exercise to begin on April 13, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
