International Rescue Committee Calls For Urgent Global Aid For Libya
Eko Hot Blog reports that in Tripoli, Libya – The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has appealed to the international community to send humanitarian assistance to the people in Libya affected by the floods, warning that the situation is dire.
The IRC said that the floods, which have been caused by heavy rains, have displaced thousands of people and damaged homes, schools, and hospitals. The aid group is particularly concerned about the protection needs of women and children, who are most vulnerable to exploitation and abuse in times of crisis.
“The IRC is gravely concerned about the protection needs of those caught up in this tragedy, especially thousands of women and children who have to leave their homes in search of safety,” said Abeer Etefa, the IRC’s country director for Libya.
“Urgent emergency shelter is needed for those unable to return to their homes, and psychosocial support for those who have seen their lives literally washed away.”
The IRC also warned of the dangers of waterborne diseases after sanitation and hygiene infrastructure was severely damaged.
“The floods have created a perfect breeding ground for cholera and other waterborne diseases,” said Etefa. “We need to act now to prevent a public health catastrophe.”
The IRC is calling for the international community to provide urgent funding to help the people of Libya affected by the floods. The aid group said that the funding is needed to provide emergency shelter, food, water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
“The people of Libya need our help now,” said Etefa. “We cannot afford to wait.”
